Broccoli is a hearty and flavourful vegetable packed with a wide range of nutrients. Despite being highly nutritious, it is very low in calories, providing only 34 calories per 100 grams. It is rich in dietary Fiber, essential minerals, vitamins, and powerful antioxidants known for their health-supporting properties.

The total antioxidant strength of broccoli, measured by its Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC), is 1,632 µmol TE per 100 grams. Broccoli is also a natural storehouse of valuable phytonutrients such as thiocyanates, indoles, sulforaphane, isothiocyanates, and flavonoids like beta-carotene, cryptoxanthin, lutein, and zeaxanthin.

Research suggests that these compounds help promote healthy cellular function by positively influencing molecular signalling pathways. They may offer protective benefits for various organs from carcinogen, including the prostate, colon, urinary bladder, pancreas, and breast.

Product Description

Broccoli & Its Effects

Broccoli contains sulforaphane, a bioactive compound that has been widely studied for its potential role in supporting healthy cellular function. Research indicates that sulforaphane may influence pathways involved in abnormal cell growth carcinogen.

Another important compound in broccoli, glucoraphanin — the precursor to sulforaphane — helps activate protective enzymes that support the body’s natural defence against molecular damage caused by harmful chemicals. Studies also suggest that sulforaphane may help maintain normal DNA methylation patterns.

Broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables are considered beneficial for overall wellness because they contain a unique combination of nutrients and phytonutrients, including glucoraphanin, diindolylmethane (DIM), beta-carotene, selenium, vitamins C, A, and E, zinc, potassium, and amino acids. These compounds are known for their antioxidant and cell-protective properties. Broccoli is often highlighted for supporting hormonal balance, particularly in maintaining healthy estrogen metabolism, which may be relevant to breast and uterine health.

As early as 1982, the National Research Council on Diet, Nutrition, and Cancer noted that epidemiological evidence suggests a link between consuming cruciferous vegetables and maintaining long-term health. More recent reviews — including a meta-analysis of 87 case-control studies — have reinforced the idea that regular intake of cruciferous vegetables, even as little as 10 grams per day, may contribute to better overall cellular protection and long-term wellness.
